Family Event Day: Crowns and Coronations

As The Queen becomes the longest-reigning British monarch, celebrate this important milestone with a day of fantastic family events.
Activity trail – explore the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with our activity trail and photographic display in the Quadrangle.
Storytelling – what happens at a coronation ceremony? Listen to themed stories and music in the Throne Room and find out about events on the day Her Majesty, The Queen was crowned. Sessions last 40 minutes and include a look back in time at the coronations of other monarchs, including Queen Victoria. 10:30, 13:30 and 14:30.
Family Garden Party Tours – explore the South Lawn where The Queen holds her annual garden party. See where the gardeners grow plants in preparation, learn about the famous Royal Company of Archers who guard Her Majesty on the day and sample a slice of a garden party favourite food. Tours at 11:30, 14:30 and 15:30.
Make and Take Craft Activity – join us in the Palace Coach House and find out about the different crowns and tiaras The Queen has worn for special occasions during her reign. Use them as inspiration to make your own sparkling crown to take home.
Spot the Crown Treasure Hunt – pick up a treasure map The Quadrangle and follow the clues to see how many crowns you can find hidden in the Palace.
Face painting – crown jewel themed face painting in the Family Room.

EDINBURGH SET FOR TWO WEEKENDS OF MOVIE MAGIC
This is Edinburgh and EIFF launch programme
of free outdoor cinema screenings in June
June is officially movie month in Edinburgh. In the build-up to the 69th Edinburgh International Film
Festival (EIFF) 17-28 June 2015, This is Edinburgh in partnership with EIFF, is inviting locals of all ages
to free outdoor cinema screenings in the Grassmarket and St Andrew Square.
Kicking off Film in the City on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June will be lively, family-friendly ‘dance-
along’ screenings of musical favourites such as Mary Poppins, West Side Story and Dirty Dancing, in
the wonderful setting of Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. The following weekend (Friday 12 to Sunday 14
June) will see outdoor screenings return to St Andrew Square Gardens with a collection of cinematic
gems, ranging from Guardians of the Galaxy and Indiana Jones, to Life of Pi and Brave.
Speaking on behalf of the city centre campaign, This is Edinburgh, Roddy Smith, Chief Executive of
Essential Edinburgh said: “This is the fourth year we have brought outdoor screenings to St Andrew
Square Garden, and as part of the This is Edinburgh campaign we have been able to expand this
wonderful event to include the Grassmarket for the second year running.
“The outdoor screenings have always been incredibly popular and create an amazing buzz around
the city in the run up to the world famous EIFF. When it comes to creating an atmospheric, cinematic
backdrop, there are few places in the world that can compete with Edinburgh’s city centre.”
Mark Adams, Artistic Director of EIFF said: “We are thrilled to be staging two weekends of outdoor
screenings as a wonderful preamble to this year’s festival. It creates just the right atmosphere for
film lovers to get into the film festival mood.”
